Why sustainability is important to NIVEA

Our goal at NIVEA has always been to make your skin feel happy and healthy, and we’re dedicated to making sure that the environment is happy and healthy too. We’ve set ourselves ambitious sustainability goals, as creating sustainable skincare products that are as gentle to our planet as they are to your skin is a challenge that NIVEA is willing to tackle.

For the world to become a better, more sustainable place, we need to come together and help the planet now more than ever. We’ll share with you what we’re already doing to become more sustainable, as well as our ambitions to improve the world. We hope that you’ll be there on this important journey with us.

What does sustainability mean & why is it important?

Sustainability is how we preserve the world around us, live more ethically and be kinder to ourselves and our planet. It’s become an important part of our everyday lives - from what we buy from the supermarket to how we get rid of waste and travel around the world.

Becoming more sustainable as a leading skincare brand is vital if we are to have a positive impact on the environment. We need to become more conscious of the importance of maintaining our beautiful planet. In doing so, we will need to work hard to try to counter the devastating effects that climate change has had and will continue to have on the world in which we live.

Why choose sustainable products?

Choosing sustainable skincare products is becoming more important every single day in order to protect our planet. Skincare can be sustainable in many different ways, from reducing the amount of packaging materials used, recyclable packaging, vegan formulas, to sustainably sourced natural ingredients. All play a crucial part in helping to make the environment a better and safer place to live and breathe.

What are we doing at NIVEA to be sustainable?

We want to be transparent and honest in what we’ve already been doing to be more sustainable, and what we’re going to be doing in the future. Sustainability is truly at the heart of our brand values and is shared by everyone who works at NIVEA. We’ve come a long way in making sure we’ve got the most sustainable sourcing, recyclable packaging and much more.

5 GREAT THINGS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

sustainability

31 ELEPHANTS WORTH OF PLASTIC SAVED PER YEAR

Literally 112 tons of plastic saved on a global level, based on current volume estimations.

*based on the average weight (3.6ton) of a female African elephant

sustainability

CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCED BY HALF

That’s 50% less CO2 generated in the production of this bottle.

sustainability

RECYCLE ME

The bottle is recyclable. Did you know the cap is made of a different plastic to the bottle, so that it can be securely screwed on? That means the best way to facilitate the recycling process is to unscrew the top beforehand.

sustainability

TRANSPORT IS MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY

Through the new bottle, transport is more efficient. To be exact: we can carry 10% more on a pallet, saving a whole pallet in transport for every 10,000 products shipped.

sustainability

MORE SUSTAINABLE THAN OUR CURRENT BOTTLE

The reduced-plastic solution was discovered after a two year R&D process that examined other bottle alternatives.

Sustainable sourcing & producing our skincare

We make sure we choose the most sustainable, responsible sources. It’s of the highest importance to us to ensure harmless sourcing of our ingredients to protect our planet’s biodiversity and our climate, use sustainable palm oil and organic, natural ingredients.

Our commitment to the environment extends to the way in which we produce NIVEA skincare products - from achieving 100% of electricity from renewable energy sources in 2019, as part of our effort to decrease our CO2 footprint, to ensuring good working conditions for everyone involved in making NIVEA products.

Waste reduction & recycling

At NIVEA we made the commitment “zero waste to landfill” early on – and we’ve accomplished this. This means that none of our established production centres sends waste to landfills.

We are also ensuring that our packaging is sustainable and have dedicated recycling goals to fulfil by the end of 2025.

Reducing Plastic Pollution

To make sure our products have as little impact on the environment as possible, we do everything we can to address potential issues immediately and effectively. We knew how detrimental microbeads are to the environment, so we actively removed microbeads from all of our products and officially became microbead free in 2015 - well ahead of the government’s ban of microbeads in the UK in 2018.

That’s just one example of our commitment to the environment, and we have more ambitious goals coming up in the near future.

50% LESS PLASTIC

WE REDUCED THE BOTTLE’S PLASTIC USE BY HALF***

We knew that being sustainable meant doing things differently from the ground up. So we put everything under the microscope before deciding on the new bottle we have today.

*** 50% less plastic vs same size NIVEA Body Milk bottle with cap.

OUR ROAD TO A NATURALLY GOOD BOTTLE

A journey of passion and persistence. Our path towards doing our bit for a better planet.

Values & commitments

We want to share with you our values and commitments as a leading skincare brand. From ethical skincare, animal cruelty to the ingredients in our products and more - we strive to be as honest and authentic with you as possible.
